Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition experienced by approximately 1 in 5 Australians. With symptoms including abdominal pain, mucus in the stool and diarrhoea and/or constipation, it’s an unpleasant and often very uncomfortable condition to manage.

While the cause itself is unknown, environmental factors like stress, diet and infection can trigger an attack or the worsening of symptoms. Recent research has also shown that the brain chemical serotonin plays a role in IBS, altering the function of nerve cells in the bowel and causing changes to the pain response. Digestive problems such as Colitis, Constipation or Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be treated by Ayurveda. Contact the Ayurvedic Wellness Centre in Bondi Junction, Sydney today.

IBS does not cause long-term damage and doesn’t contribute to the development of more serious conditions or diseases but is a sign that something within your body isn’t working the way that it should be. In Ayurvedic tradition, IBS is seen as a pathological condition which impacts the function of the GI tract, especially the small intestine causing varying contractions, often referred to as ‘altered GI motility.’ An Ayurvedic evaluation seeks to find the root cause of the excessive motility and correct it, leading to a decrease in inflammation and restoration of health.

To effectively treat IBS you will work closely alongside one of our Ayurvedic doctors to diagnose exactly what is happening within your body. A variety of tools is utilised to form a thorough diagnosis, which then informs treatment. The treatment protocol will focus on restoring the balance of the body and the normal, healthy functioning of the tissues.

The treatment protocol will focus on:

  • Removing the build up of toxins within the body
  • Improving nutrition and digestive function
  • Lowering stress levels and supporting the nervous system
  • Strengthening the bodies ability to heal

This four-pronged approach works beyond the surface systems to completely overhaul your health and wellbeing at a deeper level and may involve:

  • Lifestyle modification
  • Counselling
  • Prescription of kitchen and medicinal herbal medicines
  • Instruction in gentle yoga postures and breathing exercises
  • Prescription of Ayurvedic rejuvenative massage and detoxing treatments
