Abhyanga – Ayurvedic Herbal Oil Massage

1 hr
$195

Description: An Abhyanga full-body massage begins with a head, neck and shoulder massage using warm herbal oil, then continues with a rhythmic full-body massage covering your arms, back, abdomen, legs and feet. The therapist adjusts pressure, pace and oils to your needs throughout the session. Afterward, warm towels remove excess oil, and you can rest with herbal tea in our meditation room.

An Abhyanga full-body massage suits you if you want a calming, nourishing treatment rather than a strong remedial massage.

Best for these ailments:

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Abhyanga mean?

Abhyanga comes from Sanskrit, and it translates roughly to massaging or anointing the body with oil. Ayurveda uses it both as a professional treatment you receive from a therapist and as a self-care ritual practiced at home.

The oil takes centre stage in Abhyanga more than in a traditional massage. Your therapist applies warm herbal oil in flowing, rhythmic strokes rooted in Ayurvedic principles, aiming to balance your body and nervous system rather than work deeply into muscle tissue.

Your therapist selects a warm, herbal-infused oil based on your constitution, skin, current concerns and treatment goals. Before your Abhyanga massage, you complete a form about allergies, sensitivities, medications or past reactions so we can choose accordingly.

Yes, oil reaches your scalp and hair as part of the traditional head massage. If you’d rather keep your hair oil-free, let your therapist know beforehand, and they can adjust that part of the Abhyanga massage where possible.

Tell us about all allergies you know of when you book and again before your Abhyanga massage begins. Your therapist can check ingredients, swap in an alternative oil or advise against the treatment if there’s any doubt. Avoid any oil you know has caused a reaction.

Where practical, leave the oil on for 1.5 to 2 hours to absorb fully. When you shower, use warm water and a gentle cleanser and follow any advice your therapist gives.

Not for a relaxation booking. Your therapist selects a suitable oil from the form you fill in before treatment, without needing to know your dosha. If you have an ongoing health concern or want a clinical plan, book a consultation with our doctor first.

We generally hold off on pregnancy massage until after your first trimester and only proceed with your maternity care provider’s approval, since some Ayurvedic techniques and oils aren’t suitable during pregnancy. If you have a fever, acute infection or feel unwell, wait until you recover. Menstruation usually isn’t a barrier if you feel comfortable, but mention it to your therapist so they can adjust the Abhyanga massage.

You undress only as far as you’re comfortable with, and professional draping covers you throughout. Your therapist uncovers just the area they’re working on at any given time; you’re welcome to keep your underwear on, and you can talk through any preferences before you start.

Yes, and we encourage you to. The Abhyanga massage should always feel comfortable, so speak up at any point if you’d like lighter or firmer pressure, less oil, more warmth or extra attention on a particular area.
